Most often I was told to use LocalTalk Bridge. "It's unsupported software, but it works fine. It was initially designed to allow serial AppleTalk printers to be shared via the built-in Ethernet connections of a networked Mac." I tried installing it, but unfortunately it won't work when my iPrint Adapter is on at the other end of the LocalTalk network 30 meters away. I think it would have worked without it, but not on Mac OS 8.5 or higher; anyway my Mac crashed three or four times when I was trying to activate it, then I gave up. I was also told about LaserWriter Bridge ("allows you to put an Appetalk printer on the printer port of a system that was connected to the rest of the appletalk network") and several other router/firewall packages like IPNetRouter, DoorStop or NetBarrier. I have not tried this kind of software yet; I'll post another follow-up if one of these solutions happens to work. Thanks again everyone! If she installed some of her software after getting to school and didn't do it with extensions off or only the base system software, she might have some extension conflicts. I strongly recommend Conflict Catcher which she could then use to do a Conflict Test. Also, there is an excellent website called MacPitstop (http://www.macpitstop.com/) which allows you to upload a "snapshot" of your computer and will email you a report analyzing problems/conflicts, etc. She would have to first download the Report Generator program but after that, it works like a charm. Alan: If you restart the iMac with its' extensions turned off (by holding down the shift key at startup.) and it runs all right then you could probably guess that it's suffering from some sort of software conflict and you'll have to systematically dissable groups of extensions and control panels in order to determine which one. If that's not it then the next thing to try is to remove the Preferences folder from the System folder and then restart the machine. It'll create new default prefs on startup. Don't trash the original because there'll be things in it you'll want. If that doesn't help then you could try resinstalling the system software with a clean install option. That makes a new System and leaves the original untouched but de-activated. After the install, don't add on any non-Apple drivers for printers or USB devices. If it suddenly starts to behave then you could surmise that it was a software problem. Probably damaged System or Finder resources. It would probably be wise to check Apple's support pages, download and install any firmware or ROM file revisions. If it still acts up, then it may be hardware related. You could try removing any RAM added after the purchase . You could even remove the factory original if there's another to run on. Try some of these. This is a big question mark. Apple has only officially stated that any Mac that originally shipped with a G3 or greater will work with OSX. That said, what Apple _really_ means is that they'll only _support_ OSX running on those systems. There are already reports from people who have installed OSX Beta on upgraded non-G3 systems. Sonnet and Newer have both said they intend on supporting OSX using their upgrade cards. (A tech at Sonnet told me the other day to wait before I installed it (I have a sonnet-upgraded 7600) that they had just gotten their copy of the beta themselves.) A (beige or B&W) G3 upgraded to a G4 should certainly work...in fact, that's really what the original 400mHz G4 gray and white systems _were_. Apple has always been quite pretty conservative in their estimates of what software runs on what systems. Note, for instance, the system requirements for iMovie (a 333+ mhz G3, FireWire iMac or better) whereas a number of people have run it on old 604e systems. Now to the reality of the matter. OSX is processor and graphics intensive. You'll need a bunch of memory (though people have reported it running happily in 64 mb of ram. With a decently fast hard disk, 64 Mb is certainly doable, as virtual memory under OSX is faster than OS9's and more reliable, but, as always, real is better than virtual.) If you have a old G3, though, memory is quite cheap these days. You'll also need accelerated graphics, which means an add-on graphics card for most people with pre-B&W systems. Fortunately, this is an area that _finally_ seems to be opening up for Mac users.
