If you can boot from a floppy, run Disk First Aid from the floppy on the internal drives. Also might want to try using Hard Drive Setup to reinstall/update the disk drivers. That's because I own a 7200/90 and on Monday, I will be upgrading (hopefully) to a 7600 Logic Board. I've seen a few sources for upgrades. ICNI (www.icni.com) Pre-Owned Electronics (was www.preowned.com) Shreve Systems (www.shrevesystems.com) Most places I've looked into have a net upgrade cost of about $600 (+ or - $60) I ended up going with Preowned Electronics. (1-800-427-5343). They're in Bedford, Mass. I called them and ordered the 7600, and was billed about $1300. At the same time, they sent a purchase order saying that they'll buy my 7200/90 logic board for about $700. The board they're sending me comes with a 180 day warranty (twice as long as the warranty on Apple refurbished equipment) I've never done anything this drastic to any computer (PC or Mac), but I have added memory, hard drives, cache, Network cards to other computers, so I think I can handle this. I use the shareware "Alpha" text editor by Peter Keleher. (Information is available at the Alpha home page at http://www.cs.umd.edu/~keleher/alpha.html.) Alpha has a "remove prefix" command. I paste the selection into an Alpha document, select it, choose the "remove prefix" command from a menu, and then paste it back into my mailer document. Since I have Alpha open almost all the time anyway, it's as convenient, or even moreso, as using a separate utility. Alan H. Yesterday while doing routine stuff, I think I was changing a Decor setting, there was a brief staticy sound, and the monitor went black. Tech Tool was open at the time but I had not performed any tests or anything, it was just open. I immediately rebooted, but from then on my AUDIO has been distorted and unuseable. The monitor is fine. I noticed no particular static problems at the time, but the machine had been running all day so some build-up was possible, I suppose. I have a 7600/132 with small powered speakers connected to the mini-plug, and the AV RCA connectors going to a mixer and into my stereo. This setup has served me perfectly for over a year, until now. Today, after a couple of reboots, the small Apple speakers are sounding normal again, but the AV output is still baffed. Sounds like the wrong impedence or something, but how could that be? I have zapped the PRAM, didn't help. Is this a hardware problem for sure? Am I looking at a new logic board, or is audio on a separate card? The logic board was replaced for something unrelated (unnecessarily, as it turns out) while it was still under warranty. Will the Apple warranty on the replaced logic board extend for a full year from it's being installed, or is that asking too much? If you use Eudora there is a wonderful solution, a shareware item called Quote/Space/Tab. It is a PlugIn for Eudora. Another Eudora plugin is called Add/Strip Quotes. They are both accessed through Eudora's Edit menu under the "Message PlugIns" item. If you do not use Eudora, there is a shareware program called "Add/Strip" which I think is currently at version 3.4.1. You can get that one at http://www.shareware.com. I haven't studied it as carefully as I should, but on first glance it is not as intuitive to use as I would like, though it appears that it would certainly do the job. If you get ircle 3.0b10 for example it comes with a long list of IRC servers and you can easily add more one at a time or import as a batch and replace the entire built in list. However if you use some other mailers, they may do weird stuff (CommuniGator does, for instance). I tried messing with that stuff to make other digests (MacSystm, MacHrdwr, MacAppli, MacNet, etc.) display the name of the sender, but I couldn't get it right and repeated attempts over 6 months to reach author Akif Eyler were unsuccessful. We have that message sometimes on our home ethernet connecting 3 Macs, 2 printers and a cable modem using a hub. Sometimes it is solved by shutting down all the equipment and resetting the cable modem. Sometimes it requires zapping the PRAM. One time I threw out everything to do with Open Transport, including AppleTalk, and reinstalling from the System CD. That included throwing out Preferences as well, and using File Buddy to view the files on the hard drive, then using it to make the Desktop file and Desktop Database as well as the Appleshare PDS visible, then throwing those three things away and restarting. After the rebuild of the desktop, resetting the AppleTalk control panel and Open Transport settings gave us a working setup. Perhaps somewhere in that list of actions will be your own solution. One brief thought: are there dip switches on the printer that need to be set? And are you using the correct driver for the printer? OK, this message is slightly off topic, but I was curious... Apple has done a lot of wavering on what Rhapsody will be and who it will be used by recently. From what I understand, they aim to limit it to a sort of network OS, leaving the average user with MacOS; in the same way that Microsoft spawned their Windows NT and left home users with Windows 95. I personally am excited as heck about Rhapsody. Everything I've seen so far indicates that it will have most of the advantages of a UNIX type file system, but the MacOS feel on top of it; neat! True multitasking, multiple hardware compatibility (the version for Pentium machines), and a gazilion other cool things. So, the question is, is the mac community so entrenched in the current OS that they wouldn't jump on the chance for these improvements? Or is apple just out of touch? Would you people be willing to switch? And if so, is there any way we can get Apple to make Rhapsody the standard for all Macs instead of just a select market? I'm afraid that Rhapsody might be Apple's last big chance to grab a larger market share, but by limiting it to fewer users, they might miss out. Well, that's my 2 cents. Thanks for the indulgence.
