May 10, 2001. Since they first released MacTicker in 1999, Galleon Software has been at the forefront of the Macintosh stock browser market. Aladdin Systems purchased the product soon after, and Galleon continued as the prime developers of the newly named PowerTicker. But today, with the release of PowerTicker 2.1 under the Galleon banner, the leading stock browser on Macintosh has come full circle. "Selling PowerTicker to Galleon Software makes good sense," says Jonathan Kahn, CEO of Aladdin Systems. "It puts an exciting piece of software back into the hands of the people who created the original version, and will allow Aladdin to focus our resources on extending our StuffIt technology, enhancing Spring Cleaning, and expanding our offerings for Developers." PowerTicker is a specialized web browser that queries financial websites around the world and reformats the information it receives as an animated stock ticker and a collection of concise reports. The built-in portfolio manager uses the latest available stock quotes to calculate the current value of your investments; even your international holdings are automatically converted at the current exchange rate and tallied in your currency of choice. One integrated package lets you monitor how much your holdings gain or lose over time, recognize buying opportunities, spot problem areas before they start costing your money, even built experimental portfolios to test the water without risking your savings. PowerTicker 2.1 is a free upgrade to all previous owners of Aladdin's PowerTicker, and the transition should be painless since the new application recognizes Aladdin serial numbers. The new release fixes a number of small problems with version 2.0.1, but adds no new features. "We've missed the direct contact we used to have with our PowerTicker customers," says Colin Biggin, the president of Galleon Software. "They were always the best source for new ideas, and we're looking forward to quickly getting back in touch with them and building the new features they're looking for." When we 'scroll' a document, by clicking scroll bar or hitting page down, the document is not scrolled to next page. It actually 'jumps' to next page. Sometimes it is hard to find the point where we were watching, especially near the end of the document. With Pretty Scroll, it is easier. Since the scrolling process is animated, we can follow the movement and find the last point easily. Last week the Sony finally gave out and I got a new Sylvania 17" as a replacement. When connected to the Power Tower, the new monitor has a significant amount of flicker at all resolutions, but the monitor is fine if I attached it to my Powerbook. Do I have a video card problem on the Power Tower? If so, did that have anything to do with the Sony monitor dying and can I harm the new Sylvania? Also, if the Power Tower video is sick, what is the recommended fix? On MP3Rage, I have difficulties connecting to servers or searchs take forever and downloads often fail to start. With Limewire, searches are slow and downloads frequently fail. With Napster, I had very good results and I am looking for a decent alternative to Napster. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. There are a number of programs that provide bulk email capabilities, not to mention all traditional email programs, and the fact that they can be used to send email messages to multiple addresses does not make them spamware. In this case, when we first received complaints about MaxBulk Mailer some time ago, we removed the program from the Info-Mac Archive and contacted the author. We said that we weren't comfortable posting a program that could be used so easily for spam, and requested that he do several things before we would accept the program back, including: * Add and advertise an X-Mailer header identifying all mail sent through MaxBulk Mailer so anyone could easily filter it out. (The other bulk email programs do this as well, and our analysis has shown that they're seldom used for spamming.) * Note clearly that the program is not for spamming on both the program's Web site and in its archive. Last I looked, there's a No Spam logo on the site, and the archive now contains a file talking about how spam falls into the same category of junk faxes. When the author met our requirements with an updated version of MaxBulk Mailer, we agreed to post it. >While the SMTP header may 'avoid spamming uses', it isn't clear just >how, especially since there is no way to check that the mailer's >list is (confirmed) opt-in. There's no way to check that with any program. It's trivial to paste a slew of addresses into the BCC field of any email client, and in fact, most spam does come from traditional email clients like Outlook and Pegasus. Info-Mac retains the right to reject file submissions for any reason, although the main times we do it are with pirated software, copyright infringements, and stolen code. In this case, we felt our intervention to encourage the author to make his software less useful for spam was sufficient and helpful to the community. In general, though, we absolutely do not want to put ourselves in a position of evaluating the merit of everything that comes in. cheers... -Adam -- Adam C.
