WHAT IS FINDER WINDOWS PRO? Finder Windows Pro is a MacOS 8-savvy utility that adds a "Window" menu to the Finder. If you use "Window" menus in other applications, you know they can be convenient when you have more than a couple windows on your screen. Like the "Window" menu in many other applications, the Finder Windows Pro menu gives you the ability to bring specific windows to the front. The Finder Windows Pro menu also includes commands with which you can stack, tile, zoom, and cycle through the Finder's windows. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to these commands so that they are easily accesible. You can also add your own custom items to the menu and assign keystrokes to them as well. In addition to the standard menu in the menubar, Finder Windows Pro includes a contextual menu item with which MacOS 8 users can add the familiar Finder Windows Pro menu to the Finder's contextual menus. Finder Windows Pro requires MacOS 7.1 or higher, and a 68020 or higher processor. MacOS 7.5 or higher is preferred. Finder Windows Pro is MacOS 8-savvy if you are a user of MacOS 8.0 or higher. Fergus Lalor writes with the following question on G3's with internal Zip drives: >Is it possible to disconnect the Zip and thus free up its ID for another drive? Yes, it is, and it's quite simple. Simply open up the G3, and disconnect the two cables leading to it. One is a wide, flat cable. This is the SCSI cable. The other is a narrow cable, with (I believe) two wires, one red and one black. This is the power cable. Disconnect them both, and the Mac won't even know it's got a zip drive in it. Remove the SCSI cable from the motherboard, since it won't be connected to anything, unless you're replacing it with a Jaz, or one of your SCSI hard drives. Also, keep in mind that the existing internal HD, as well as the CD, are IDE devices which won't take up IDs on your SCSI bus. I have just checked the Apple Store web site (http://www.store.apple.com). Do so, then click on the "Power Macintosh" button, then click on one of the configurable models (both G3 desktops and minitowers). You will find that the zip drive is a deletable option; if you choose only a floppy drive, $150 is deducted from the price of the Mac. Finally, since it sounds like you have quite a few expansion needs, you may want to consider the soon-to-be-introduced 233mhz minitower, which has a base price of $2149, as reported around various Mac sites on the web. Supposedly, it'll be available by March(?). Personally, I'm pleased as punch with my new G3/233 desktop. It whups the pants off the 9500/180mp (dual-processor) I use at work. I ordered it through MacMall, and through use of their "we beat prices" deal, got an additional 64mb of RAM (96mb total), an additional 2mb of VRAM (4mb total), for $2140. That's a SMOKIN' machine! And it runs Virtual PC, too... hee, hee, hee.... It's light-years ahead of my 6100/60av. For example, the "MacOS Support" folder in my CodeWarrior folder, which contains oodles of tiny little files, reports the following when I Get Info on it in its usual location on a 500Mb HFS partition: 54.6 MB on disk (43,393,775 bytes used), for 2,543 items There's 10 MB of slack, because many of the files are smaller than the drive's allocation block size. If I copy that folder to a Zip disk, it reports: 43.3 MB on disk (43,393,775 bytes used), for 2,543 items No slack, since the allocation blocks are much smaller. If you Get Info on your source folder and on the backed-up-to-Zip target, I believe you'll find that the "nn bytes used" figures match, and the "nn on disk" numbers are different. If this is the case, then you're seeing the HFS block size limitation problem. As you mentioned, an appletalk network. but, you have to turn on file sharing 2. Timbuktu. Commercial and you have to install it. 3. Diskfit or backup utility. You could do this by writing an applescript to copy the backup utility and another applescript from a floppy onto the hard drive (test this on another machine first). Then, have the applescript that was copied onto the hard drive run the backup program (and you memorise what you have to press to get everything backed up onto floppies). You get to shuffle floppies and then restore it onto another machine. 4. Retrospect remote. Memorise what you need to install the client and back it up over a network. Retrospect is commercial software from Dantz (Diskfit) and is a little costly for this. 5. if you can't use 3 because the classic doesn't have apple script then make a system 6 boot disk setup with macromaker that will mount a server volume (eg the powerbooks') and copy the hard drive over to it. you will need another machine with system 6 to do this. 6. physically take the hard disk out of the classic and put it into another machine. a dealer may be kind enough to do this for you and let you copy files but i doubt it. a friend is a good option. Don't ask me if you could put it into a powerbook because i really don't know but i do know that powerbooks use smaller hard drives than regular macs (in physical size) so this may be a problem. 6. Use a backup that was surely made soon before the screen died (and if there wasn't, there should have been). I have had files go away for a number of reasons, some involving my stupidity (yes, i know these things inside out and i still make stupid mistakes that even beginners wouldn't) and some not. Even if you buy a $200 zip drive for backup (it comes with DiskFit Direct, a really good backup utility) it is worth it. it may seem excessive (just say if you have a 100mb drive) but how much is your work worth? if you really want to know, erase your hard drive without a backup, then you'll know. Trust me, a meg is worth more than a dollar. 7. get the screen fixed. This is only feasable if you can get somebody to do it really cheap or you still want to use the machine. 8. see if you can pick up a cheap 2nd hand classic and put the hard drive with the data into it. i would give you a 9 and 10 but i can't think of anything else. --------------------------- Stewart Smith Founder/Programmer/Owner Purple Grapefruit smi52@mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 22:46:05 -0800 From: Bob Jacobson Subject: GV x2 and Timbuktu Pro I recently upgraded my home modem from a Supra 288 to a GV Teleport 56K X2. Hmm. Not reassuring! The connection with warm and cold reminds me of the "stiction affliction" that hit Mac SE's around 1992; many of the SE's were using a hard drive whose internal lubrication was prone to drying up -- thus, a few degrees more temperature might bring it back to operation by heating the lubricant up just enough. I, too, have OS 8.1 and Netscape standalone 4.04. Before installing the update I had both NN 2.02, and 3.04 on my hard drive. NN 2.02 did not work so swift after but 3.04 did. However, after installing 4.04 the first time I had all sorts of grief that seemed to be associated with Internet Config. I also use Internet Explorer and had vers. 3 and 4.0 (final) both 128bit encrypted versions. I found that NN and IE seemed to compete for Internet Config settings and once I disabled NN's call for Internet Config it was ok. Also, I did what another poster suggested with respect to re-installing Netscape after installing OS 8.1. With respect to your settings for Netscape, mine are virtually opposite to yours and I have very good success with it. For instance, I have 64 megs real RAM, with Virtual Memory on (I believe NN works much more reliably with VM on), cookies are set to only accept those which go back to their source, although cookies should not cause what you describe, Java is on, as is image loading. I have found these settings consistently reliable for me with the exception of flexibility with Java. I would consider trying to alter some of your settings to see if Lycos will load properly. Since this does not seem to occur anywhere else, so far, if it is confined to Lycos then perhaps Lycos calls for something you have disabled. With respect to the damaged files. The quickest, easiest method to fix them, and the one I used, is to launch ResEdit, pull down the "File" menu and you will see a selection called "Verify". Select "Verify" and you will get a dialog box where you can navigate to the questionable files. Forgive me for not having the specific list from Apple handy, but you can request to verify any files in your Extensions folder,(or Control Panels), that have Open Transport, or abbreviations of it such as Open Tpt, AppleTalk, the Chooser, TCP/IP. When you ask ResEdit to verify these files, in my case it popped a message saying the files needed minor repairs that were successfully performed. Once verifying all the files you can simply quit ResEdit. Apple is on record as saying the problems with these files will in no way interfere with their functioning properly. However, as you have found, Repair Utilities will continually report problems. After I did this I get a clean bill of health. You can find specific information on this issue at: http://macfixit.pair.com among others. hth, Gord I was going to buy a copy of "The Power Of Positive Thinking", but then I thought, "What the heck good would that do?". ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 98 16:32:50 -0800 From: Kimberly Andrew Subject: OpenTransport 1.3/OS 8.1 bug >Subject: OpenTransport 1.3/OS 8.1 bug (Q) The following was posted in the EvangeList Digest of Wed, 28 Jan 1998: >From: EvangeList >Subject: PR - Conflict Catcher 4.1 and Mac OS 8.1 > >Apple Computer released Mac OS 8.1. The files have damaged resource forks. If you have a copy of ResEdit (downloadable from Apple sites and included free with various developer tools), use that to 'verify' the files that CC 4.1 indicated were damaged. ResEdit will repair the problem. Since OpenTransport is indeed vital to Netscape's operation, it is possible this caused your crash, but no way to tell until you fix them. > >Now normally these upgraders have a clean install option. So, yes, you have do download it separately. Really, the Mac OS 8.1 Upgrade file is only 16 MB in size - you can't expect it to contain everything that can fit on a CD-Rom (which can hold hundreds of MB of stuff). More keep pouring in. I'd like to say thank you individually to each one of the people who replied, but that may soon become impossible. Still http://macfixit.pair.com/reports/macos8.1.shtml seems to be the place that clearly outlines the solution. As for Lycos not loading, it appears to be due to the fact I didn't reinstall Netscape after installing MacOS 8.1. Like that old Java bug mentioned earlier on the digest Netscape requires a clean install (all its System Folder preference folder files removed except the Bookmarks and Mail files) in order for it to work fine when a new OS version is installed. I've seen ads in MacWarehouse and other catalogs that show different types of cards that can be installed in a Mac to display, perhaps store, manipulate and do other funky things to television video. Prices range from $99 to $399, maybe higher. The purposes for these cards seem to overlap. If I want to be able to watch television on my Mac, what is the minimum hardware/software I need to do this? Which combo do you recommend? Only needs to be able to store the channel numbers for easy channel surfing and have a window that can be resized. I don't need to store, manipulate, add subtitles or any of the fancy stuff, just do whatever is required to watch tv on a machine made for much more grand purposes. Input would come via cable provided where I live. Also, would like to know how this affects processor speed (for example, if I want to watch a tv show on one part of the screen while doing some sort of computer work). Comments/advice appreciated. Silverstein" Subject: Word: Documents automatically saved as Templates I have noticed strange behavior with WORD 6.01 that has not only happened to me, but also to several colleagues. After opening a certain document received in the mail, or after trying to make a template, every single document saved is saved in the template format. They receive the template icon and not the normal icon. There is no way to save a document normally under these circumstances. This is not a virus, and the only way to get out of it is to restore the original NORMAL template. If any of the documents saved while things were being saved as Templates are opened, then the whole thing starts again. This is a real pain. Does anyone know why this occurs and how to prevent it from occurring? Thanks in advance for your insight into WORD... The universal opinion seems to be that this is a rock solid application that does what you need it to do, does it correctly the first time, and doesn't waste your time with software bloat (the latest version still fits on an 800k floppy, if you can find one). The only reservation I have received came from a user of WN 3.0 who noted that *sometimes* the program had difficulty providing a WYSIWYG font menu when one or more of the fonts to be displayed was PostScript. No big deal, it still gives a perfectly functional Chicago menu. Second question: Short of the venerable "sneaker net" how might someone obtain new (and legal) copies of this marvelous little tool? WordStar apparently doesn't handle it any longer. SoftKeys is now The Learning Company, and doesn't seem to do much grown up software these days...any idea if WriteNow is still commercially available, and if so, where? The CD icon appears on the desktop, but The Zip+ tries to be very clever, which is usually a mistake with low-horsepower embedded systems, I think it's probably something to do with the magic dual-mode parallel/SCSI operation of that drive. I have seen a similar problem with a client's machine, which had a Matsushita (standard Apple-shipped) internal SCSI CD-ROM and an external Nakamichi 6 CD stacker. Moving the Zip to the end of the chain sort of fixed it, but it still wasn't very reliable (unless you booted without extensions, sometimes the system would freeze copying large files to the Zip). It was only a temporary solution anyway, they have got some larger removable drive now (SyJet I think) and have moved the Zip+ onto another machine.
