Unfortunately the utility did not work under 7.6. At the Macworld Boston show I asked the folks at the Connectix booth whether they plan an upgrade for this wonderful utility. Due to popular demand, the hot keys portion (as well as another that I forgot) will be incorporated into the OS 8 version upgrade of Connectix's Speed Doubler. I recently purchased a well used Mac SE. When I opened it up to install more memory, I found that it had a Dove 68030 accelerator board installed. This was a quite a surprise since the machine was working just fine, but at the speed of an ordinary SE(slowly!!). I seem to remember that most add on accelerator boards required some kind of system init to function. I see no such init installed in the system folder(extension or control panel) for this machine. It is running system 7.0. I have run a couple of benchmark type programs on it, they all say that it is running at the speed of an SE. Curiously, the benchmark programs also say that the machine has a 68020 processor???? Does anyone, by some chance, have any information on this? Dove Computer Company seems to be out of business. The accelerator board has no model number at all, just "Dove" on one side, and it has a 68030 chip on it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Aug 1997 17:27:05 -0400 From: daiyanh@mindspring.com (Daitaro Hagihara) Subject: Info-Mac Digest V15 #165 essage-Id: >Date: Tue, 5 Aug 1997 14:56:11 -0700 >From: "Tamas, Peter BGI SF" >Subject: CD-ROM > >Also, how do I get the addresses of Internet lists. I do not have access >to usenet. Couple points. Mailing lists aren't substitutes for usenet newsgroups, and vice versa. If your ISP carries a shit news server, then either use a public nntp server such as ruraltel or u-hildeburg (?), or get yourself an account of Super Zippo. If you are worried about objectionable materials in newsgroups, then public news servers are a way to go, since all binary newsgroups are censored on those servers. (For a list of public news servers, e-mail me.) Whatever, depriving yourself of news feeds is highly discouraged. Second, there are far more mailing lists than the ones listed as described below. To get infos for these "private" mailing lists, you must keep an eye on appropriate newsgroups (*.list, *.bbs.*, and so on) on usenet. This is another reason you should get access to usenet. To get a list of mailing lists, send a letter to LISTSERV@VM.GMD.DE (I couldn't think of any other server more complete than this one) with the message (not the subject, which can be arbitrary): Help Lists Global In a few moment, approx. 1MB text file will be sent to you along with listserv refcard. And there you have it. Note that many mailing lists in the list are either defunct or discontinued, just like there are many defunct newsgroups. Every time I have done a Mac install, I deliberately do not check AppleGuide, because I wind up painstakingly removing it and all its guide files. Ditto for other things that are not checked. I also do not check AppleLaser Printer files because I have never, ever, owned one. And yet guess what always winds up on my hard drive--laser printer extensions--ALL of them!! I exchanged a series of emails with both ASD Software (the US distributor) and Highware Software Ltd (the developers). The last I heard was that upon reconsideration, it would be too hard to update PUF for MacOS 8. :-( Please, please! Everyone visit these web sites and tell these folks how great PopUpFolder is and how you miss its absense under MacOS 8. Maybe if they get enough customer feedback, they will reconsider their decision. I for one would gladly reinvest another $30 for one of the Mac's best programs. Cooper" Subject: MacOS8: a jaundiced view I agree wholeheartedly w/ Graeme Forbes on nearly every point in his post. I won't reiterate those points but would suggest that substantial caution is appropriate in considering whether to upgrade. I have a different set of add-ons, compared to Graeme's, for Sys7, which either don't work in OS8 or which I am sorry were not implemented in 8. Hidden Finder Features, Norton's Directory Assistance, Stuffit's Copy/Move feature, BeHierarchic, the Copy interface w/ Speed Doubler, among others. The thing that bothered me most about 8 was the time required to write windows in the Finder. I had read that 8 was a bit slower in this task, deliberately exchanging improved cursor response for this. However, this delay was too much. I found the Finder windows ugly, especially relative to what is possible in 7 w/ Greg's Buttons and / or Aaron. The loss of the Views control panel (to set the default view for folders) I found extremely disappointing. The imitations of Windows I often found gratuitous and lacking in substance. I don't see features that merit calling this upgrade OS8, as opposed to Sys 7.7. I certainly don't think Apple should have charged for this update, having recently charged for 7.6. The fact that some people, whether at Apple or wherever, perceive the need for a "campaign" to convince others to upgrade to OS8 tells the whole story in a nutshell. This happened to me too, but it doesn't pose a real problem. Boot from the CD w/extensions off, install OS8, and go. I didn't have any real problems. Control Strip didn't get installed, so I had to do a custom install later (I didn't do an Easy Install, maybe that's why). OS8 has been pretty stable, much more so than 7.5.5, but initiall seems about the same as 7.6.1. Time will tell. Some of the new feature are pretty nice, but losing some very handy add-on's is not (Now Utilities, etc.) Overall, the compatibility has been pretty good. I haven't noticed an appreciable performance gain, if any, but maybe with something more powerful than a 7100/80 will be more noticeable.
