I'm trying to find a free email service for my son to use. Something like juno.com, which unfortunately is only for Windows systems. I'm interested in particular in an email service that one can access through the Internet and does not require a dialup connection. Any recommendations? Thanks! Hello, I just bought Cat 5 , 4 pair (PVC) cable, crimp on connectors and what I suspect is a midprice range crimping tool and starting building a network. I have now learned that ensuring cable continuity is a priority that is testing my novice skill. On my third attempt, I suspect that I may have one good connector in place at one end of a single cable. :( I have noted that in the "kit" that I purchased, the connector package label states "for stranded wire" and I believe that I have solid wire. At any rate, my existing connection is grossly amateur, at least in appearance compared to factory assembled cables. Any advice would be nice as I am finding this a difficult task. Even with good lighting it is hard for me to see if the end of each wire is in the front of the connector. Does anyone know of an easy way to test my new cables? I have no up and running network? Are there any inexpensive testing devices? ... is one necessary? Thank you from my first network, Scott Horton ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Dec 1998 04:34:12 +0000 From: Ezra Nathan Subject: changing to HFS+ Hello> My internal HD has system 7.5.5. My external HD has system 8.5. I have been running on 8.5 for around 2 weeks, have experienced very few problems indeed and now want to abandon the earlier system. I also want to try out HFS+, so I intend to initialise the internal HD to be HFS+. I have a PowerComputing PowerCentre 150 and use FWB's HDTPE 2.5.3. I'd like advice as to whether to initialise or format the internal HD to be HFS+ using the Apple Drive Setup or HDTPE. Would it make any difference? I've e-mailed FWB with this question but got no reply. If the HFS+ sytem works very well for me I intend to then initialise the external HD to be HFS+ too. I'm rather cautious about all this because I cannot afford to be without my computer working, and without internet connections. Can anyone foresee problems in what I plan to do? I have a large collection of files that I'd like to change the modification and creation dates. Any ideas on how to go about doing this other than through the joyous process of using ResEdit? Or how would I go about using AppleScript to do that? My wife tells me that a story is circulating on the Internet that one of Microsoft's "Where are you going today?" commercials is accompanied by the Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem (for those of you who don't know, the Dies Irae describes the damned being flung down into Hell). We haven't seen the ad. Is this true? (Oh, please, let it be true!) Is it part of Netscape Communicato? which I do not have running. I use Navigator, and its help file has a section on Netcaster and how to use it, but it assumes that one has it already, saying to start it click on its window. Well I can't find any Netcaster window, or logo, or anything relating to it, except in the help file. When I insert a disk the disk mounts fine and the icons appear with no problem. I can read simple text files again with no problem. The problem occurs when I try to launch and application on the CD ROM or open a file other than simple text or try to copy the files to my hard drive. I get Error 15 messages when I try to open an app and read errors with opening or copying. I am using FWB CD Toolkit 3.02 with System 8.1. Any suggestions would be welcome. BTW I don't know if its relevant but I just relocated cross country and had some inital problems with my hard drive.
