DeskTray can be minimised to a small bar that floats over all windows just below the current application name. Clicking on that bar will expand the tray. Clicking back to the small bar or double-clicking in a unused part of the tray will reduce it. If you've even been in the situation where you had lots of opened windows in the Finder, covering the desktop itself, and you wanted to drag an item onto your hard-drive icon, then DeskTray can help you. Clicking on an item in the palette will open the corresponding window in the Finder. DeskTray fully supports drag&drop. You can drag&drop items onto DeskTray like if you were dragging them on Finder items : dragging an item will move it to the desired folder. Holding down the option key while dragging will copy the item, and holding down option and command keys will create a shortcut. You can also drag&drop items from the palette. You can resize the tray when it's opened. Move the mouse on the left edge of the tray. The cursor will change in a double-arrow. Click and drag to resize. DeskTray is 100% Appearance-compliant. Power Tower 240 running OS 8.6. One day the machine crashes and hangs on restart. I boot off the system CD with OS 8.0 and the internal drive mounts fine. I try to reboot off an external drive with OS 8.6 and where I have Norton Utilities, but it hangs again on boot. I try rebooting off the Norton CD (OS 8.5) and that hangs too. I reboot off the OS 8.0 CD and go to a partition on my external drive where I have some space and install OS 8.0. I reboot off that 8.0 partition, come up clean and can see the internal drive. I run Norton which finds an unrecoverable error. I do a full backup using Retrospect. When verifying the backup, it has problems with 3 ColorSync data files (I think connected with my Umax scanner). To be doubly sure, I also copy my system folder to the external drive. Copy is successful EXCEPT FOR THE SAME 3 FILES!!! I reformat the internal drive and do a complete restore from Retrospect, except for the 3 trashed files. Everything now works fine. OK, what is OS 8.5+ doing that OS 8.1- didn't so that damage on a drive other than the one identified for boot can interfere with the boot? BetterPlayer is a freeware open source utility that plays QuickTime movies without the clunky UN-Mac like interface that was introduced into QuickTime Player and Sherlock 2. BetterPlayer plays QuickTime movies that are either dropped onto the application or opened within. Once a QT movie has been opened, users can change the file type and creator so that the file will open with BetterPlayer by default. Other useful options that have been added are automatically play and loop options that can be applied to every file individually. This is especially cool for those that have a favorite MIDI file they like to listen too, just double click and the file will start to open. To make life easier, these settings can become default settings as well as the option to automatically change the file type and creator to that of BetterPlayer. Just as important as applying these settings, they can also be removed restoring the file to it's natural state. Since the only thing that BetterPlayer adds is a STR# to the resource fork, no data can be damaged by the application. Foxchange Shareware has released BetterPlayer as open source software so that other programmers can extend the application's functionality. Several things are planned for future releases, the ability to add a resource fork to a file that doesn't have one so BetterPlayer can work with it, sizing options, remembering window positions as well as basic editing features. BetterPlayer is the foundation for another unnamed application that Foxchange Shareware may be developing in the possible future. Currently BetterPlayer 1.0 is available for download at ftp://ftp.foxchange.com The latest version of BetterPlayer can be found at http://www.foxchange.com As well as the goal of producing high quality games for the Mac market, Foxchange Shareware is also going to be introducing utilities into the Mac market. ********** ABSTRACT CROPPED ********** [Archived as /info-mac/app/better-player.hqx; 282 K] ------------------------------ Date: 4 Feb 2000 From: Federico Filipponi Subject: [*] BOOM 1.2b1 Dear Info-Mac moderators, I'd like to submit for inclusion on your archives the following software: BOOM 1.2b1 (beta release 1) What is BOOM? BOOM is an arcade game in the grand tradition, bringing the playability and feel of the glorious 8-bit consoles on the Macintosh. It can be described as "Bomberman meets Doom". Actually, I took the basic Bomberman idea and dropped it in a "Super-Deformed Doom" scenario (whatever this means). As a space marine your mission is to penetrate 8 alien infested areas, each one divided in 10 sub-zones, eliminate all enemies using your bombs and finally kick the Big Alien Boss back to where he came from. System Requirements: PowerPC processor; 5.5 MBytes free memory; Mac OS 7.0.1 or later; 640x480 or larger monitor supporting 256 colors; Sound Manager 3.0 or later. Recommended Configuration Mac OS 8.1 or later; Sound Manager 3.2 or later; InputSprocket 1.1 or later. What's new in BOOM 1.2? * Completely rewritten in C/C++. * Recompiled with the latest updates of the Sprite Animation Toolkit and the MADLibrary (music drivers). * Highly improved all standard application interface elements. * The Preferences dialog (formerly called Options) has been completely redesigned using tab panels. * The Preferences dialog is now directly accessible when in pause (the relevant menu item has been moved to the Edit menu). * The "Quick Settings" menu is now called "Options" and is located on the menubar for easier access. * Now the game automatically hides the Control Strip (if active) on startup and shows it again on quit (and when switching to the Finder). * Added an option for automatically setting the monitor resolution to 640 x 480 on startup. * Added support for external input devices like joysticks and game pads (requires InputSprocket 1.1 or later installed). * Added transparency effects to visually enhance some animation details. * Introduced a frame-skipping mechanism to speed-up animation on slower machines. ********** ABSTRACT CROPPED ********** [Archived as /info-mac/game/arc/boom-12b1.hqx; 3106 K] ------------------------------ Date: 4 Feb 2000 From: John Rethorst Subject: [*] Free Backup 1.0 Powerful and flexible backup program. But that's not all : Wapp pro is more than a simple windows switcher. It lets you quit, or hide any application, quit all the applications, or hide them all. You can also exclude some applications from being quitted or hidden by these commands, like for example SpeedDoubler that you don't want to quit, or QuickTime player that you don't want to hide... Wapp pro lets you also navigate through the windows of the front process by keyboard shortcuts. You can exchange the 2 frontmost windows, send the frontmost window to the back, or bring the last window to the front. It also lets you cycle through the applications list. Wapp pro enhances the Navigation Services dialogs. It brings the Click There It Is concept to the Navigation Services open/save dialogs. (Battery life with a monochrome display is phenomenal because I can turn the backlight off. The screen has no filters for color or grayscale, so I can see on and off pixels without a backlight. I added an Envisio video-out card and an internal modem, and it has max RAM of 8 Meg. When the power goes out, as in last week's record-setting snow storm in central NC, I am NOT out of luck. I don't use it for heavy-duty work, but I can't beat it for battery life and dependability.) Last week I opened it up to check on the video card since I was having an external video problem. The answer turned out to be RTFM and use software, but I looked at the hardware first. It was fine for several restarts after that while I was testing monitors. It got too cold to startup at one point last week, but then came up fine when it warmed up. What a trouper! And then it did something funny, AFTER all those chances last week for which I wouldn't blame it for having problems. The video is all screwy. Basically the screen is divided into about 5 pixel columns. The top half has every other column and fills in with gray checkerboard (one pixel on, neighbors off), and the bottom half has the columns the top half didn't show, and I can only barely access the top half and left half of my screen; only one-quarter of my screen shows in this odd manner! Now, I've seen weird video on my PowerBook 170 years ago when I first bought it and it needed its floppy drive replaced, and it was my fault for not seating the video connector tightly when putting it back together. So I thought I had not been careful enough, and I opened the case and reseated the connector. Well, I've checked my work 4 times, and nothing I do (including setting it in the coziest warmest place in the house, since it didn't like getting cold) fixes the video. Please, does anyone have any ideas? I think I'll try contact cleaner, but really the contacts look very clean. (Your letter is enclosed below.) If you ever figured out what your problem was or how to do something about it, I would appreciate your telling me what you learned, because I have a very similar problem and am getting exactly the same error message. In case it is relevant, I describe my problem symptoms and my computer setup. In my case, double clicking on a SimpleText text file does not open the file, and I get exactly the same error message you described. This happens even if the SimpleText application is in the applications menu at the time (just as you mention). On the other hand, using the menu item "File: Open..." I CAN open text files. Also, double clicking on 5 OTHER types of SimpleText files opens them fine (namely, file types "PICT", "3DMF", "MooV", "ttro", and "sEXT"). You mentioned that Disk First Aid could find nothing wrong in your case. In my case, neither Disk First Aid, Norton Disk Doctor, nor TechTool 2.5.3 finds anything wrong with the Desktop file nor with several other things I checked. I also found what appears to be a preferences file for SimpleText (namely, the file "Release Data" in the "System Folder:Preferences" folder, which has creator code "ttxt" and file type "pref") and thought that maybe the error was there, so I removed that file hoping a clean version would get created on Restart and clear up the problem. The file didn't get recreated, and as far as I can tell SimpleText works exactly the same now that it is missing. On two occasions, I inserted my iMac "Software Install" CD-ROM, and replaced the SimpleText application file by a SimpleText application file from the CD-ROM, and that didn't help. My problems started after I experimented with making certain files and folders invisible and applying the "FindByContent" indexer, to see whether the indexer skipped invisible files or directories. During the course of these experiments, I got some very weird errror messages concerning the files and folders I was experimenting with, and I suspect that the damage to SimpleText was done somehow at that time. I have an iMac, old version B (233 MHz), with a 6 gigabyte hard disc, 64 megabytes of RAM, and am running Mac OS 8.6. Many thanks for any help you can provide.
