It's also one of the first Mac programs ever, dating from 1984 (but works fine with system 7.1, 32 bit etc.) and written by Bill Atkinson, originator of Hypercard. It may represent the genesis of his thinking about Hypercard. In any case, it's a gem of a utility. (It's only 17K, plus a sample Reminders text file and a manual.) It works for me, which has made me the envy of all my friends and relatives. By setting reminders 10 or so days ahead, I find I'm as on the ball as the best of the rest of my friends and relatives in remembering to buy cards and presents (and to actually send them)--and way ahead of the date-impaired. Birthdays and Such runs on almost every Macintosh computer that's been made since 1986 -- Mac Plus through the latest PowerMacs. It requires only System Software version 6, but takes advantage of System 7 features when available. The steps to use Birthdays and Such are simple: You type important dates into a text file (just modify the sample Reminders file that's part of the package). And you set Birthdays and Such to run every time you start your Macintosh. (Simple instructions are in the manual) Then every time you turn on your Macintosh, it starts up Birthdays and Such. The program looks up the current date and scans the Reminders file for upcoming events. And voila, in the topmost window on your screen, it displays just those--the ones you need to do something about. It's at this point that I write myself a short note to buy a card, or I pull out the card I bought earlier. (If you leave your Macintosh running for days at a time, that's ok, too: Birthdays and Such will update to the next day's reminders every night on the stroke of midnight.) Birthdays and Such is What'sItWorthWare--that is, you decide what Birthdays and Such is worth. (If you use it, it's worth _something_.) Enjoy! Moderators, please replace any older versions you have in your gui directory. THE SOUND BITE: Working with your files, folders, or applications has never been easier. It's now just a click or drag away! THE ELEVATOR STATEMENT: Control Strip Menu is a control strip module that puts a hierarchical menu of your favorite files and folders on your control strip. This lets you access files, folders and applications with just a click or drag! You can drag items to copy, move, or make aliases to them. Control Strip Menu works the way you want it to because it can be customised in a multitude of ways. REQUIREMENTS: This module works on desktop Macs, portable Macs, and PowerMacs. System 7.0 or later is required. Macintosh Drag and Drop (which is built into System 7.5 or later) is highly recommended. ABOUT THIS VERSION: This is a minor new version. It has a few bug fixes. The main improvements in version 3 are: * better menu placement * supports multiple display folders (like the buttons on Launcher) * supports separators on the display strip * supports re-ordering of the display strip * allows you to drag out of menus this is on top of the great functionality it already has. Please see the included Read Me files for all the details. Control Strip Menu is shareware. Enjoy, Vincent. Do whatever you want with it: modify it, give it away, sell it or incorporate into your own programs (the C source code is provided ). I don't expect payment, royalties, acknowledgement or anything. But a thankyou would be appreciated. With it, you can produce a stand-alone application that plays PICTs files (forwards or backwards in sequence). It's nothing fancy - but what do you expect for free? It was written by me over a wet Lancashire weekend in March 1996 - to provide a basic way of supplying information when some graphics are called for (ie: text alone just won't do). Having written it (and found out how simple it was to do) I wondered why a little thing like this wasn't already available. Maybe it is - but I haven't come across it. Anyway, here's my version. To make it work you'll need ResEdit (supplied free by Apple) - available from bulletin boards, magazine disks & CDs or from someone else who's had a Mac for a while. The application play PICTS starting at ID number 128 onwards until there isn't another one that follows in sequence. What you've got to do is drop them into the PICT resource using ResEdit - in the sequence you want them to play. You can also use ResEdit to change the ID numbers and hence the sequence. To change the closing message: use ResEdit to change STR# resource, ID number 128, item 2 to suit. To create a PICT resource (also for free) press shift-apple-3 (keyboard 3 NOT keypad 3) simultaneously and the system will take a screen shot. This will be saved on your hard disk with a filename like "Picture 1". Double click this and it should open with SimpleText (also free with the System). Select the bit you want and "copy" it to the clipboard. Switch to ResEdit and you'll be able to "paste" it into a PICT resource. Simple as that! If you find this useful, I'd appreciate a thankyou note, a postcard or an example of what you've used it for. It's not obligatory - it would just be nice. Most of us Mac users never even use those keys; FunKeys not only gives them a use, but it also makes them really useful. What it allows you to do is program all 15 of them to either open applications, execute an AppleScript, or invoke an FKEY macro. For example, F1 can open America On-Line, F2 can open Microsoft Word, F3 can turn off the sound, and F4 can quit all open applications. It's entirely up to you. In order to take advantage of the AppleScript functions, you will need to have System 7.5 or later installed; otherwise, you can simply use FunKeys to open your favorite applications, or FKEYs, at a blast. This new version of FunKeys puts up an icon menu in the menubar, so even if you don't have an extended keyboard, you can still take advantage of FunKeys. This version is a free upgrade to all registered users. FunKeys can also switch over to a certain application if it is already running. And, best of all, you can still use the Function Keys for their current uses, at the same time that FunKeys is running. Also, FunKeys comes with a few sample, free, AppleScripts. The previous version of FunKeys had over 933 downloads. X-Win is my first color scheme. It's one of the few schemes I can stand to look at for any length of time yet is not similar to the beloved Aaron-esque schemes. It's supposed to look like a X-Window environment... read on if you wanna know why... Why is it called X-Win? I always thought X-Win was a cool platform because of the change in color from the passive window to the active window on mouseover (yes I know this scheme doesn't do the mouseover thing but that's Apple's deal, not mine. I would if I knew how...) so instead I have a definite "active" window to help you know where you are and "deaden" the rest of the windows black. (It also uses that neat little "X" as an icon.) I recommend the "Silver" Accent color. What have I done to make X-Win? Gone to the edges of the earth... How do I install X-Win? Drag this into the Kaleidoscope Color Schemes folder, which is located within your extensions folder, which is in your System Folder. Select X-Win from Kaleidoscope. (It's probably the last one.) Yet Another NewsWatcher 2.4.0 is my expression of thanks to those people who have supported past versions of YA-NewsWatcher by registering it and by being good net citizens and helping others use and enjoy the program.
