The solution came from Doug Frick (it actually arrived before I got the Info Mac digest with my question in it! Wow!) who suggested to zap the PRAM. Here is how the saga concluded: Set up: Performa 5200 CD/TV, System 7.5.5. SCSI chain: Zip first, then Tahoe MO (only way because the Tahoe uses a strange plug and I didn't want to fork out money if I was going to sell the Zip anyway) drivers: Iomega, Tahoe (Iomega loads first, is active; inactivation of the Iomega driver puts the Zip under the control of the Tahoe driver, with the result that all files on the Zip appear in 8.3 DOS format) Solution: I used TechTools to first save my PRAM settings (in case anything went wrong) and then used it again to zap the PRAM ... restart ... Iomega driver active ... inserted MO disc (the one I couldn't initialise and had given up as defective) ... NEW: message "this is a blank disc - please use the formatter to initialise it" instead of the previous "This disc is unreadable - would you like to initialise it?" ... disc was ejected ... started formatter ... formatted MO disc without problems ... transferred 273 files (ca. 90 Mb) onto MO ... halfway through: "Cannot copy file x because a disc error occured" ... transfer cancelled ... had copied 5 folders (about 40 Mb) just fine ... try file alone ... copy is fine ... try to delete half-copied folder ... error "Cannot delete file x1, x2, x3 ... because it could not be found" ... then it goes banana ... Disactivate Iomega driver (using Extension manager) ... restart ... zap PRAM again -> now Zip and MO under control of Tahoe driver ... sees Zip files just fine (previously showed file names as 8.3 DOS format) ... insert MO disc again ... message "this is a blank disc - please use the formatter to initialise it" !!!!! (the five folders are gone!) ... format MO disc again ... copies all 273 files without problems ... copys / unstuffs another > 600 files without problems My conclusion is that the Iomega driver was both changing the PRAM and led to corruption of the directory on the Tahoe (Newton had previously reported lots of B-Tree errors and corruption of the main directory (MTB?) before saying "A major error occured that I cannot repair" when the system ran under the control of the Iomega driver). Therefore be very careful when using the Zip with other drives - I'm not sure that I haven't lost a couple (hundreds?) of files (it's a bit hard to keep track of over 9000 files ...) I would like to find some method to have incoming faxes automatically convert to TIFF files on a hard drive (no human involved). For multi-page faxes, each page would get a unique name. Either the software does this, or it is scriptable to do this, or it auto-prints faxes and you know of a print driver that creates TIFF files. I have the Global Village software (and modem) and it will not automatically save to TIFF. Global Village is not willing to part with their file spec so I cannot read the files their software creates. I played with the auto-print capabilities a while back and the software seemed to get confused as to what had and had not been printed. I have some different fax software that came with some Motorola StarMax computers, and that software does not automatically save to disk as TIFF either. Long ago I tried the STF fax software and found it to be less than reliable. Perhaps it is better now and perhaps it will do this? Any suggestions on fax software for the Mac that saves each fax automatically as TIFFs OR suggestions on print drivers that print as TIFFs would be appreciated. System 7.1.1 can be updated to 7.1.2 for free, but that's it. You should be able to find copies of 7.5 around for low cost (check your local university) that can then be updated to 7.5.3, which is a solid OS (but it eats a lot of disk space and RAM). The steps to upgrade an LC are very simple: 1. Sell your LC 2. Buy a newer computer. You can get good models for under $600 complete. Apple made the LC so that it couldn't be upgraded. An upgrade board would cost you around $400, might as well get the new computer. -- "Ethical Relativity: The exact same universal laws are always true, and apply to you no matter what your frame of reference is." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 May 1997 23:46:37 -0600 From: "Leon E. Any pointers? ard ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 97 09:29:11 CST From: JOHNSON@TWSUVM.UC.TWSU.EDU Subject: Word 6.0.1 and page numbers On a recent document, I had created a header and a footer with page numbers in footer. Although I could see the greyed out page numbers in page preview, they would not print. Any ideas? Page margins were 1" all the way around. Other documents with the same set up printed the page numbers fine but on this one they would not print. I don't remember changing anything that would make a difference. Any help or ideas is most appreciated. Thanks Brenda Johnson johnson@twsuvm.uc.twsu.edu -------------------------------- --Info-Mac-Digest-- End of Info-Mac Digest ******************************
