To be able to build lapck shared libraries, the Makefile had to
be patched. the patch was made based on info from a Fedora 7
source RPM for lapack, that can be found here: 
ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/development/source/SRPMS/lapack-3.1.1-1.fc7.src.rpm

You also need the slackware gcc fortran package for VL5.8: 
gcc-g77-3.4.6-i486-1.tgz
