Your browser's bookmark file contains much more information than you would expect. Besides the bookmark's name and URL information such as the date the bookmark was last visited, the day it was added to your list and comments you may have added. This extra information almost doubles the size of the bookmarks file and is removed by gURLfriend. The gURLfriend application also searches through your bookmarks list and indexes all the bookmark folder names and creates a table of contents. This table of contents greatly speeds up access to your online bookmarks since you can quickly jump to the folder you are interested in without having to transfer the bookmark information for the URLs you are not interested in. Why would I want to use gURLfriend? If you are like me you put a copy of your bookmarks list on your home page. By using gURLfriend you will significantly decrease the total size of this information and also make it easier to use. My bookmarks file size went from 97K to 56K after running it through gURLfriend. It is also indexed which makes it easier to use. A parsed bookmarks file takes much less time to transfer when posted on your page. Most importantly, if you break the folders into separate files, the time the is required to access a particular bookmark is significantly reduced. The table of contents file is a fraction of the total size of your bookmark information. Mine for example is 3K. Also, gURLfriend strips all information except the URL, its name and the comments if you allow them to be kept. All other information is removed which not only reduces the file size, it also removes possibly sensitive information that you might not want posted to the net. Just hold down a hot key when opening, and you'll get a dialog that lets you: - Open at the minimum, maximum (the maximum size is displayed), or any other size in between. - Save the new size if you like. - Cancel, if memory is too low and you don't want to wait for the program to start up, quit and free up more memory, and start it again. URL Manager Pro (tm) is an Apple Macintosh program for managing Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), the universal address format of the Internet. URL Manager is a full-featured, standalone Macintosh application that allows users to create a single, highly flexible repository for maintaining URLs. In particular, URL Manager offers tight integration with Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Claris Emailer and Eudora for effortless management of Internet addresses. URL Manager Pro 2.0 supports the new Mac OS 8. It features the new Appearance Look and Feel, Contextual Menus and works with Apple's Internet Address Detectors. URL Manager Pro offers a substantial number of features, including finding and deleting duplicate bookmarks, saving via FTP, a new Control Strip Module called Mondriaan, and is Kaleidoscope-savvy. URL Manager Pro has garnered many glowing accolades in the Macintosh press, including TidBits and MacMagazin, and featured in Guy Kawasaki's keynote at the MacWorld Expo in Boston. "URL Manager is fast, slick, and easy." says Adam C. Engst, Tidbits. "URL Manager Pro ist ein echter Hit!" says MacMagazin, Germany. "Un des meilleurs utilitaires d'adresses sur le Net" says UniversMac, France. Changes in version 2.0v4 *Command key shortcuts have been added to the Save Document Alert. Use Command-D for "Don't Save", use Command-. for "Cancel" and Command-S for "Save". *Addition of a new attribute for bookmarks: "Lock URL". You can set this attribute via the Get Info Dialog. When checked, Big Brother will not validate or change the URL. Use this attribute when you know that a URL is correct. Sometimes Big Brother wants to change a URL to a relative URL or reports that the URL is broken when in fact it isn't. When "Show Marks" is checked, the bookmark is shown with a 'lock' icon. *Netscape Messenger has been added to the E-Mail popup menu in the Internet Preferences dialog. *The number of bullet characters in 'hidden' password fields now correspond to the number of characters of the password. *Fixed in a bug in writing the URL Manager Favorites file. URLs longer than 127 characters were not saved correctly. There still is a maximum of 255 characters for a URL in the Favorites Window. *Choosing "Documentation" from the Help Menu now opens the NetHelp documentation from the URL Manager Pro folder. *Select All and typing TAB now selects all text in the Find Window. *Added shared menus support for Ircle (an IRC Talk Client). *Fixed this message: "This file is used by the system - it cannot be opened." *On a double-byte script system (i.e. Kanji) URL Manager Pro will not use entity reference constants when exporting to HTML. *URL Manager Pro 2.0v3 did not execute the SHIFT-Command menu commands. According to Jon Hueras the new Appearance Extension introduced with Mac OS 8 changed the system's internal behavior in a subtle way that caused Ofoto's popup menus to break. He has posted on Info-Mac a small extension that supplies the behavior that Ofoto expects so that the popups can work again. I've found it very difficult to build a stable system for them (bombs just when the first init tries to load), so when I got the latest IIci, to expedite things, I just copied the bootable system folder from a working machine onto a spare hard drive, and then installed that drive in the new machine. It's OS 7.5.5 with OT 1.2, btw. The target machine booted fine. I then renamed it, to avoid network conflicts. Problem is, under certain conditions, the "daughter" machine insists on having the boot disk of the "mother" machine (its "Mommie"?) mounted over the network. Happens every time I open the chooser or launch BBedit, but not all apps cause this behavior. BBEdit accepts a "cancel" and loads anyhow, but chooser will not stop asking, and there's no way I've found to escape short of actually mounting the requested disk. I've rebuilt the desktop, trashed *lots* of pref files, searched for and destroyed all aliases, and done an all-file search for the name of the source machine's disk (searched file contents, not just names). Nothing worked. What *did* work, was to rename the boot disk of the target machine to the same name as that of the source's boot (the one it's asking for), but I don't want to do that permanently. What is causing this behavior, and how do I get it to stop? Alternately, advice on exactly how to build a bootable system for a Daystar Turbo '040 would also solve my problem. Just building a new "fits any Mac" system from Apple distribution disks usually doesn't work. That's why I cloned the stable system I accidentally happened to build a while back. The projector has a port to connect a cable to the ADB port of the mac in order to use the IR remote to control the mouse on the mac. All sounds great. The problem is as follows. If we connect up the system as the manual states (video of mac to projector, ADB port connected), the G3 boots up in a mode asking for a start up disk (blinking ?) Inserting a bootable floppy immediately results in the disk being ejected, trying to force a boot off the CDROM using the "c" key results in the CDROM being ejected. If we disconnect the ADB cable going from the mac to the projector, the G3 boots up fine. OK, so now we repeat the test, but use instead a PowerComputing Power Center 150 and a PowerMac 8100. For both of these, the test with the ADB cable connected works! They boot up fine. So now the issue I want to know is has anyone had problems with the ADB bus on the new G3's? Are there any charges to the person receiving a call through the regular telephone, when the call was placed using Internet Phone? In other words say I call a Connecticut telephone number using the Internet Phone software on my PowerMac, will that Connecticut resident be billed for the phone call, or again are the only charges those found by the monthly charges of the internet provider? 7. If the application is written correctly, or simply makes use of the Mac OS' built in TEClickLoop routines, then the methods (1) and (2) should NOT go flying by no matter how fast your machine is. Apple long ago anticipated this user interface issue and put in, in effect, a 'governor' so that the text would not scroll by faster than a certain limit when using either ofthe first two methods (assuming the application used the built-in toolbox routines for this. As proof, take some benchmarks with scrolling through the same long document in, for example SimpleText, with a variety of macs, with a variety of color depth settings. Once you get beyond a certain moderately fast mac (like a IIci or so) then the scrolling speed really doesn't change much. [Note - because of this issue, I've always _HATED_ comparative benchmarks that compared scrolling speed on macs to other machines. Useless as a benchmark!] I am pretty sure this issue is/was discussed in their human interface guidelines documentation way back when. If the application is scrolling too fast with either of these two methods, then the programmers should think about fixing it. Now, the third method is akin to scrolling 'page by page' instead of line by line, and it is more likely to be left ungoverned - it should be faster with faster macs, since most users generally want this speed to be fast since they use this method to move greater distances in a document. Bruseth" Subject: Subject: System 8 memory problems I had problems with memory allocation under OS 7.6, 8.0, and now, 8.1. I also had the same dialog boxes telling me that I must close windows and quit programs in order to proceed. As Andrew Minuhin stated in the last post, this is indeed a problem with the Finder. The Finder is supposed to dynamically update itself as memory requirements change but apparently this isn't always the case. I tried the "Finder Heap Fix" utility that was suggested previously but it didn't work for me. Possibly because it was designed for earlier operating systems? I'm not sure why. Here's what I finally did to solve the problem - First I opened the System Folder and took note of what the Finder looked like. The reason for this is because when I completed the task I wanted to make sure that the Finder was still "blessed", i.e. operational. The Finders in recent System Folders have a rectangle with an Apple smiling face in it indicating that the Finder is blessed. I forget what older ones look like. When you've completed the project you must make sure the Finder looks like it did when you started. If it doesn't, try opening and closing the System Folder until it does. If you restart your computer without the Finder blessed and in its proper place you will have a serious crash on your hands. Next I made a duplicate of the Finder and left it in the System Folder along with the original. Leave the original Finder in the System Folder until the very last step. Then, in case of a crash, you'll still be able to start back up. For the next step, you will need either a shareware Control Panel named "Snitch", or Apple's utility, "ResEdit." If you have Snitch, select the Finder copy and "Get Info." In Snitch's expanded Get Info box there are two other small boxes. One tells you the "type" of the selected item while the other tells you the "creator." In the left box you can bring up a small popup menu by "clicking" to the right of it. Scroll down and select "app". Now close the Get Info box, wait a moment while the Finder changes into an "application", and then Get Info once again. When it opens back up you will see the familiar three boxes telling you the "preferred", "minimum", and "suggested" sizes. You should adjust the "preferred" setting so that your Finder problem stops, but not so much that you are taking too much RAM away from the rest of your system. Try bumping it up in increments of 100 K at a time. If it's too little you can come back later and repeat the procedure until you've fine tuned it to your satisfaction. But first you need to go to the "type" box and change it back to "fndr." Then close the Get Info box and wait for it to change again. Drag your original Finder to a safe place (make sure you save it in case of trouble) and rename the Finder so that it reads "Finder", minus the "copy" part. Check to make sure that the new Finder is blessed. If it is, you should locate the Finder's preference file, throw it away, and restart the machine. If you don't care to become a registered user of "Snitch", you can use "ResEdit", an Apple utility which is free. Take your Finder copy and open it with ResEdit. If you drag the Finder copy onto ResEdit while holding the Option key down any small problems with the Finder will automatically be corrected. A little added bonus! After the Finder copy is opened you should find the "size" resource and double-click on it to get it open. I believe that you must double-click on another resource and then scroll down to arrive at two other boxes. One is named "Size" and the other is named "Min." Adjust the number in the Size box by increments of 100 K as was done with the other method. Remember that the values in this box are in "bytes" not "kilobytes." After you're done, close all boxes and answer yes when asked if you want to save changes. Follow the same procedure as stated above and that should do it! Hope this does the trick for you. Kenneth T.
