To restore the original file from *.tar.gz format, users normally run the following commands on UNIX:

<br> 1) gunzip  *.tar.gz </br>

<br> 2) tar -xvf  *.tar </br>

<br> It can be done in one step and that is: </br>

<br> gunzip &lt; test.tar.gz | tar xvf - </br>
<br>
The above workes with any version of tar. If you have
gnutar (the tar that comes with linux is gnu tar) then
you can also use the -z option and tar will do it all
for you:<br>
tar -zxvf test.tar.gz
