Apollo 2.2
==========
This is version 2.2 of Apollo, the very popular launching utility.
"A must-have program" (MacAddict, August 1998)
"Apollo, the ultimate launcher ... My advice: grab it before it
gets gobbled up by some softare company that knows a $200 product
when it sees one" (David Pogue, MacWorld)
"The best $30 I ever spent" (DJ: Seattle, WA)
"I've never been so pleased with a bit of shareware" (JR: Palo
Alto, CA)
"The best launcher around" (WS: Surrey, UK)
"Many thanks for your amazing software" (RB: Linz, Austria)
Apollo is a launching utility. You configure a menu containing those
applications, control panels, desk accessories, folders and documents you
use frequently. Then, whatever you are doing, a click of the mouse pops up
the menu and lets you open any of the configured items. Any item in
Apollo's menu can also have its own hot key. You can organise items into
groups, with each group having its own submenu. If a group is made
"active", selecting its name makes Apollo open all the items in the group
seriatim. Apollo can automatically control the sound level and screen
depth for each application, changing them as you switch between
applications. Apolo also has facilities for switching between applications
using keyboard or menu.
New features in version 2.2 include a contextual menu plugin for one-click
configuration (system 7 users are catered for as well), and more options
for sorting of folder submenus.
New features in version 2.1 included integration with Default Folder (v2.9
or better required), much improved icon handling and the ability to
position Apollo's icons anywhere in the menu bar simply by option- clicking
and dragging.
Apollo 2.2 is shareware: the fee is US$30 or 15 pounds sterling. There are
significant discounts for multiple-copy and site licences. There is no
upgrade fee for registered users of previous versions. Registration can be
made via Kagi Shareware. Registration and online registration utilities
are provided as part of the package. Kagi can accept payments by credit
card.
Apollo 2.2 requires system 7 (it is fully compatible with system 8)
and a Mac with a 68020 or better processor.

Subject: [*] Cobwebber 3.0
Cobwebber 3.0 is a program in the form of a Hypercard stack for
building web sites. It edits the HTML directly, with a system for adding
tags quickly. You can easily add your own tags, even dynamic ones, which
can have fill-in text, options, colors, local file links, and other such
things. For instance, there's a tag which asks for the number of rows and
columns you want in your table, and then makes the table. This tag is open
for editing and copying for your own tags. Full online help is provided.
Cobwebber will never be quite out of date, because you can always add new
tags for new features. I also hope that people will take advantage of the
ability to export and import tags. You could download small files enabling
style sheets, XML, new HTML stuff, and anything else that may crop up.
Cobwebber allows use of the standard color picker for picking colors, and
has a file name and link checker. If you make web stuff, get Cobwebber, for
no more than $20!
Users of 1.2 will be glad to hear that Cobwebber 3.0 is a great
improvement in many ways. This version is also thoroughly beta-tested.
(Thanks, testers!)

Digital Wipeout - the object is to score as many points as possible by "wiping
out" numbers on the board. There may be up to eight players. If you play
alone,
try to set a new record by wiping out the the entire board. Each turn starts by
rolling the three dice. You need to then try to wipe out a number on the board
by mathematically combining the three dice using one or more of the four basic
operations (addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication).

Jeremy's Control Strip Modules is a package of Control Strip Modules,
designed to work with Apple's Control Strip software. The modules are:
* Jeremy's CPU speed CSM - Displays current clock speed in MHz, or
indicates relative full/reduced clock speed with tortoise/hare icons. You
can also select the clock speed after you restart.
* Jeremy's Battery CSM - Replaces Apple's Battery Monitor module, but
displays more battery information in a smaller area! Also displays hard
drive status, modem status and remaining battery time.
* Jeremy's Clock CSM - Displays the current time. Via a popup menu, you
can customize the appearance of the display.
* Jeremy's Sound Volume CSM - A direct replacement for the Sound Volume
module provided by Apple. The icon shows the current volume setting in
both numeric and pictoral form, so you don't need to bring up the menu to
determine the current volume.
* Jeremy's Sleep CSM - A direct replacement for the Sleep Now module
provided by Apple. Via the popup menu, you can select whether or not to
bypass the dialog that appears when AppleTalk is active.
* Jeremy's Battery Time CSM - Displays Apple's remaining battery time on
PowerBooks that are capable of it. It can also "learn" the battery life on
any model of PowerBook, or display the elapsed battery time.
* Jeremy's Temperature CSM - Displays the internal temperature of a
PowerBook Duo or PowerBook 500 series.
* Jeremy's Application CSM - Displays a count of currently running
applications and DA's. Also has popup menu that lets you select foreground
application.
* Jeremy's AppleTalk CSM - Replaces Apple's AppleTalk CSM, but displays
more information.
* Jeremy's EnergyStrip CSM - Replaces the PowerBook or Energy Saver
Control Panel, and lets you adjust power conservation settings from the
Control Strip.
* Jeremy's Power Countdown CSM - Shows how much time remains before power
conservation features activate.
* Jeremy's Caps Lock CSM - Shows the status of the Caps Lock key and other
modifier keys.
* Jeremy's Sound Pro CSM - Lets you adjust both the volume and the
left/right speaker balance.
Release 1.9.3 contains updates to the Application CSM, Temperature CSM,

Subject: [*] MaBaSoft Quit CSM 1.6 de.sit
What is MaBaSoft Quit CSM?
You often run more applications at the same time?
You wish you could quit one or more applications without having to make
them active first?
You would like to know their memory sizes without having to display the
"About This Computer" box?
You would love to have your largest unused memory block size always under
your eyes?
If so, then MaBaSoft Quit CSM is what need.
Quit CSM lets you quit applications without having to make them active. You
can quit a single application, all background applications or all running
applications. You can moreover quit the Finder and background-only
applications. You can finally specify applications which have not to be
quitted by Quit CSM.
Quit CSM also supplies memory information: it displays the largest unused
memory block and application sizes.
MaBasoft Quit CSM is 5 US$ shareware. It available from the MaBaSoft ftp
site at
ftp://macware.erehwon.org/pub/by_author/MaBaSoft/Quit_CSM_1.6.sit (English)
ftp://macware.erehwon.org/pub/by_author/MaBaSoft/Quit_CSM_1.6_D.sit (German)
ftp://macware.erehwon.org/pub/by_author/MaBaSoft/Quit_CSM_1.6_F.sit (French)
ftp://macware.erehwon.org/pub/by_author/MaBaSoft/Quit_CSM_1.6_I.sit (Italian)
and from all major Macintosh shareware ftp sites.
System Requirements
MaBaSoft Quit CSM runs on all types of Mac and needs System 7.1.1 or higher.
Control Strip, Extensions Strip (v1.5.2 or higher) or GoMac need to be
installed.
-------------------------------------
What's new in MaBaSoft Quit CSM v1.6?
Quit CSM is now FAT. On a PowerMac, when Extensions Strip is used as module
host, Quit CSM runs PowerPC native.
Quit CSM is compatible with MacOS 8.5b2 and Control Strip 2.0b2. The new
Control Strip will enable Quit CSM to quit applications which do not
support AppleEvents (pre-System 7.0 applications), too. At the moment
Extensions Strip already provides this possibility.
The evaluation of the largest unused block has been improved: Quit CSM now
considers both memory allocated by processes at startup and temporary
memory.

It available from the MaBaSoft ftp

ftp://macware.erehwon.org/pub/by_author/MaBaSoft/Quit_CSM_1.6_I.sit (Italian)
and from all major Macintosh shareware ftp sites.
The evaluation of the largest unused block has been improved: Quit CSM now
considers both memory allocated by processes at startup and temporary
memory.

>Since 4.0.5's sources are available to non-us citizens, including 128
>bit encryption would be considered exporting military technologies...
This is incorrect.
1) netscape 4.x source is not available, the 5.x source is what you get
at mozilla.org. In the 5.x source that is available, the encryption support
has indeed been removed, but certainly in netscape's binary releases
it will be reinstated.
2) all supported versions of netscape seem to be available in both 40-bit
and 128-bit versions. On less-well-supported platforms (unix, mac),
netscape sometimes releases the 40-bit version first to get things out
the door and follows up with the 128-bit version later. It may be that
some platforms only get 40-bit, but the mac is popular enough to be
worth their effort.
3) the page
allows you to download browsers with either 40-bit or 128-bit encryption.
To download 128-bit you need to enter your name and address and other
personal info to verify your US or Canadian citizenship.
4) the page
has more information about netscape security.
5) regarding the relative security of the number of bits:
describes the EFF's recent
DES cracker computer, which is a custom-built machine that cracked a
56-bit DES-encrypted file in less than 3 days. 40-bit is significantly
easier to crack, and this shows that 56-bit is pretty much on its way
out (certainly can't be trusted with anything really important such as
national secrets), and will just become easier to crack as computing power
increases (roughly doubling every 18 months via moore's law, i believe).

The situation here is sort of complicated and there isn't a best answer,
so I'll just tell you what is going on without actually making a
recommendation. The story goes like this:
The ROM-based driver which handles the serial hardware on non-GeoPort
Macs is 68k code.
The ROM-based driver which handles the serial hardware on Macs with
GeoPort serial architecture is native PowerPC code.
FreePPP is written in 68k code.
OT/PPP is written in native PPC code.
Switching from PPC mode down to 68k emulation carries a big, BIG
overhead. So if your Macintosh is NOT a GeoPort-architecture machine, you
may experience better performance overall (better multitasking, smoother
multiple downloads, fewer lost packets) if you use FreePPP. On the other
hand, if your machine IS a GeoPort-architecture machine, you should be
using OT/PPP to avoid 68k mode switch hits. PCI or NuBus is not the
deciding criterion - look at the serial ports to decide.
A mode switch higher up in the hierarchy is going to be a MUCH smaller
hit than a hit every time a byte arrives from the serial hardware.
I use OT/PPP everywhere, everyhow and everywhy simply because it's easy
to use, it works well enough in all the scenarios I care about, and (most
important) it's easy to talk people through setting it up over the phone,
because its user interface is much less complex than FreePPP's.
Regardless of which PPP implementation you choose, use Open Transport.
It's stable, it's the standard, go with it. FreePPP runs quite happily
with OT - just select "Connect Via: FreePPP" in the TCP/IP control panel.

Subject: Q: Japanese WWW sites with US MacOS 8.1?
I've posted this query in more or less elaborate forms in a couple of
usenet groups, but thus far I haven't got an answer which actually works
properly.
I want to be able to browse Japanese WWW sites using my MacOS 8.1US
PowerBook 1400. No, I don't have the Japanese WorldScript pack installed
- I do NOT need an input method, I just want to be able to view Japanese
(Shift-JIS) HTML in my WWW browser.
The most promising item I've tried thus far is an extension called Elixir
2.0 which handles Chinese big5 and guobiao encoding, Korean, JIS and
SJIS. Unfortunately it doesn't quite work :-( In MSIE 4.01 (visiting, for
example, or ), I get
pages of undecoded SJIS with an occasional kanji character (or maybe even
Chinese-Chinese characters) sprinkled in. In Netscape 4.06, I get the
same effect - BUT - OCCASIONALLY I will get proper output when I hit
reload after the page has completely loaded once. It's only about 1/20
odds though, which isn't good enough. It also seems to make the OS very
unstable.
Maybe Elixir 2.0 isn't compatible with my browser or OS - but I don't
want to downgrade either of those components. I even tried using Virtual
PC, US Win95 OSR2.5 and MSIE 4.0 with Japanese language support
installed, but even THAT doesn't work properly (surprise!) - I still get
garbage. I can't just install Japanese Win95 because the only Japanese
Windows version I happen to have handy is WinNT Server, which is a BIT
much for my PowerBook to handle :-)
Failing all that, is there someone in Japan who can help me to get a
version of Japanese MacOS 8.1? (That's assuming [a] it exists, and [b] it
will run on my 1400cs/133 32/1.2G). Apple Australia can't supply nonlocal
OS versions.
