We missed you! I have a Performa 6400 with a vimage G3 upgrade card installed. Upon installing O/S 9, the vimage software crashes the machine. Obviously, the vimage s/w is not O/S 9 compatible. I found this note on everymac.com: "Vimage, the subsidiary of the Japanese Interware corporation, manufacturered (sic) and sold an innovative and unique line of G3-based processor upgrade cards primarily for Macs and MacOS-Compatibles that were previously unable to be upgraded. On August 5, 1999, Vimage announced that it would no longer sell upgrades direct to consumers and would instead seek an OEM-strategy." I think this means they got my money, and I am now screwed. Anyone know if there is an alternative driver for the vimage card that is O/S 9 compatible? TIA. -RAG ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 11:20:43 -0500 From: gene nail Subject: cases for exterior IDE driver Does anyone have any personal experience with the USB cases sold by several mail order companies (for about $80) that you can buy and install an IDE drive and connect it to your USB port. i was wondering if it was difficult to install the drive in the case, and how speedy, or how slow, the particular drive was once installed. it would help to know whether it's worth getting, for example, a 7200 rpm drive or if the slower 5200 rpm drive was just as fast since the limitation on the IDE drive speed might be the USB bus. i am con siding getting a 20 or 30 gig drive to use as a back up that i can take off site for security. can anyone offer any information or personal experience? thanks, gene nail ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 09:47:20 -0500 From: Alan Lehotsky Subject: Info-Mac Digest V17 #6 In article <86t0as$2j52$1@traf.lcs.mit.edu>, digest@info-mac.org wrote: >>>From: Tito and Shari Poza >>>Subject: splitting an ISDN line >>> >>>I presently have one telephone line in my apartment, an ISDN line. I don't think you really want to do what you are thinking of. That would only allow ONE computer to be online at a time and would require that you have a second ISDN modem - which has got to cost at least $150. Plus, it would probably confuse the phone company when it saw TWO TA's trying to assert their presence at once. BOTTOM LINE - DON'T TRY IT. You could by a serial switch ($15) and just connect the ISDN modem to that, and run two serial cables (one to each computer). That would only set you back about $30 - but you still can only have one machine online at a time. Go to http://www.sustworks.com and download IPNetRouter ($89) You will also need (at a minimum) a cross-over ethernet cable or a cheap ethernet hub and two regular ethernet cables. [about $60 if you shop around for a 4-port hub]. Follow the instructions at the sustworks web site and you'll be able to have both machines online at the same time. [BTW, I've got 4 machines all connected to the network this way, with a Motorola BitSurfr ISDN TA, it works great] Good luck, -- Al Lehotsky -- Quality Software Management http://www.tiac.net/users/lehotsky Process Improvement | Management Consulting | Compiler Implementation ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 18:18:22 +0200 From: "Dr. Peter Stoyanov" <5040@unforgettable.com> Subject: java web phones question Dear all, I envy all windows users, who are able to take advantage of services like http://www.dialpad.com to dial to US and lately of http://www.hottelephone.com - where you can phone WHOLE WORLD for free but ONLY if you have PC. All the macs had a problem with small print when printing from Netscape. All other programs printed fine. They were running system 8.6 and I have seen this problem before and it remember it was something with ATM. So I upgraded them all to System 9.0 and installed the ATM updater for system 9. I installed Netscape 4.7 and all was well, printing from all 3 computers gave normal size printing. So now one week later I get an email that 2 of the 3 imacs not print small again from Netscape. How do I troubleshoot this? Please reply to me also. I am not even sure if the Infomac list is up? David daneel@stanford.edu ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 20:53:43 +1300 From: e_r_m@my-deja.com (Esther Michaels) Subject: Need advice: good newbie printer? My Dad has had an LC475 for three years. He now wants to get a printer. He's comfortable with what he uses the computer for (email, Word for letters, a little surfing) but is a complete newbie to printing. I have an Epson Stylus Color 600, which I'm reasonably happy with -- I don't like the way the print heads get clogged so easily (I don't print that often), and I'd rather the print quality was higher, but for the price I paid, it's good enough. I'm wondering about recommending something in the Epson range to him, but since I've had the Color 600 a couple years now I wonder if something better has come out in the meantime. My criteria are: * Relatively inexpensive -- i.e. lasers are out of the question (unless I'm hopelessly out of touch with the printing world) * Consumables are reasonably priced (which argues for an inkjet) * Economical ink use (bearing in mind, of course, that it changes with the print quality) * Easy to use -- easy ink cartridge changeover, good diagnostics, easy to clean print heads, etc * Relatively good print quality (not fantastic, but not poor either) -- he might print the odd photo I send him, but most printing will be letters etc; run of the mill B&W stuff * (I don't know if this is relevant or not:) B&W must be in a separate cartridge from Color I'd be most grateful for any advice! -- Esther Michaels e_r_m@my-deja.com -------------------------------- --Info-Mac-Digest-- End of Info-Mac Digest ******************************
